What does Aqiqah involve? 1. Sacrifice (Qurbani) An animal is sacrificed: Two sheep/goats for a boy One sheep/goat for a girl This is based on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). 2. Timing Ideally done on the 7th day after birth If not possible, it can be done later (14th, 21st, or any time) 3. Naming the child The child is often officially named on this day 4. Shaving the baby’s head The baby’s hair is shaved The weight of the hair is given in charity (usually in silver or money equivalent) 5. Charity and food distribution The meat is: Shared with family and friends Given to the poor and needy Purpose of Aqiqah To thank Allah for the blessing of a child To protect the child spiritually To strengthen community bonds through sharing food Is Aqiqah obligatory?
